REFERENCE: German Democratic Republic (GDR) (German: Deutsche Demokratische Republik; in the West, it was often called East Germany) - a socialist state founded on October 7, 1949 in the Soviet zone of occupation of Germany and the eastern (Soviet) sector of Berlin.
