REFERENCE: German Democratic Republic (GDR) (German: Deutsche Demokratische Republik; in the West, it was often called East Germany) - a socialist state founded on October 7, 1949 in the Soviet zone of occupation of Germany and the eastern (Soviet) sector of Berlin. The republic officially ceased to exist and was merged with Germany at 00:00 CET on October 3, 1990.

The monetary unit of the GDR was the Mark der DDR, until January 1, 1968 it was called the Mark der Deutschen Notenbank (MDN), until July 31, 1964 it was called the Deutsche Mark. The bargaining chip was the Pfennig of the GDR.
