{SH2.0: §II. F-A/a} {§III} 1.1. Issue : Issues of banknotes about. Jersey during the German occupation - from July 1, 1940 to May 9, 1945. 1.2. Reference: Between July 1, 1940 and May 9, 1945, the island of Jersey was occupied by Nazi Germany. More than 30 thousand islanders were evacuated to the UK. The rest of the Germans from time to time drove to fortification work. The island became part of the Atlantic Wall. In the period from October 1941 to January 1944, the construction of a system of underground tunnels was carried out by the hands of prisoners of war (Spaniards, French, Russians, Ukrainians, Moldavians). In the last year of the war, these tunnels were converted into an underground hospital, which, however, was never used. Many builders died, unable to withstand inhuman conditions. The few who fled the camp were rescued by local residents. Some inhabitants of the island - at the cost of their own lives. Since Operation Overlord did not provide for the liberation of the Channel Islands, Jersey was occupied until the surrender of Germany on May 9, 1945.
