Arbeitslager Mittelbau

Dora Mittelbau (Dora, Nordhausen) (German: Dora Mittelbau) is a Nazi concentration camp, formed on August 28, 1943, 5 km from the city of Nordhausen in Thuringia, Germany, as a unit of the already existing Buchenwald camp. In the list of external units, Buchenwald was referred to as the Dora Team. The main purpose of the camp was to organize the underground production of weapons at the Mittelwerk plant, including V-2 missiles. In the camp, the prisoners worked in tunnels specially cut into the mountain - this was one of the most difficult camps in Germany. The first prisoners sent from Buchenwald arrived to carry out construction and blasting operations on August 28, 1943. On October 28, 1944, Dora-Mittelbau became an independent camp with 23 branches and external teams. On March 25, 1945, there were 34,000 prisoners in the camp.
