333333-Paper banknotes Free City of Hamburg. Hamburg State Banknotes-444444 Großes Wappen der Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg. Darstellung 1897. REFERENCE: Hamburg is the most important of the German free cities and the first maritime trading city of Germany and the European mainland, on the right bank of the Elbe, at the confluence of the Alster, 110 km from the confluence of the Elbe in the German Sea. In the northeastern part of the city, Alster forms a vast reservoir (Aussenalster), communicating with another, smaller, lying in the middle of the city (Binnenalster, Alsterbassin). The branch of the Elbe, which enters G. from the east, branches into numerous meandering canals (Flethe), which, connecting at the southern end of the city with each other and with Alster, form a deep Upper Harbor (Oberhafen), opening into the main branch of the Elbe, forming for up to the border of Altona Lower Harbor (Niederhafen), assigned to marine vessels. The upper harbor, where sea steamers with a draft of up to 5 m dock, has marinas, sheds for goods and rail tracks. Flutes are used to transport goods to warehouses. Around the city is a rather deep and wide moat filled with water, a remnant of the former fortifications. More than 60 bridges lead through the waterways inside the city, a railway bridge 408 m long was built across the North Elbe. Encyclopedic Dictionary of Brockhaus and Efron WIKI 1 A92-A93
