REFERENCE: Hessen-Kassel (German: Hessen-Kassel, sometimes Hessen-Cassel) was a German imperial principality that existed from 1567 to 1866. It was formed during the division of the Landgraviate of Hesse after the death of its ruler - Philip I in 1567. His eldest son, William IV, received the northern possessions with the capital in Kassel. In 1866, Hesse-Kassel was annexed by Prussia, becoming part of the province of Hesse-Nassau (Hessen-Nassau). Currently, the lands of the former elector form part of the territory of the federal state of Hesse. Wiki
