Kurfürstentum Sachsen

Elector of Saxony

Churfurstl. Sachs. Cassen-Billets

REFERENCE: The Elector of Saxony (German: Kurfürstentum Sachsen) was a state entity that existed from 1356 to 1806 and was part of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1806, the French emperor Napoleon declared Elector Frederick Augustus III king of Saxony, as a result of which Saxony became a kingdom. After the defeat of Napoleon, the territory of the former Duchy of Saxony-Wittenberg passed to Prussia and entered the province of Saxony, which roughly coincides with the modern state of Saxony-Anhalt.
