Bar-le-Duc, or Bar-sur-Ornin - chapters. mountains. French department. Maas, and in the former time of the Duchy of Bar (see this word), lies on Ornen, a tributary of the Maas, and on the East. zhel. dor. (Paris-Strasbourg), 77 km to Z from Nancy. It is built on a hill and is divided into an old, or upper, and a new, or lower, city. In the first, the ruins of the castle of the Dukes of Lorraine are still preserved, from where a charming view of the surroundings opens. The lower town with four bridges over the river is well built and spacious. Of the buildings, the church of St. Anthony, built in the XIV century, as well as the church of St. Peter in the upper city. In B. there are civil and commercial courts, a lyceum, a public library, a museum, a theater and statues of local natives, Marshals Exelman and Udino. The city has 15,988 inhabitants (1886), calico, hosiery, woolen and hat factories; tanneries and foundries, breweries and large paper spinning mills. In addition, excellent fruit candies are prepared here, which make up the article of the holiday trade.
