United States of Indonesia (USA; indon. Republik Indonesia Serikat) is a state to which the Netherlands formally transferred sovereignty over the Netherlands East Indies on December 27, 1949 after peace negotiations in The Hague. In accordance with the Constitution, which entered into force on December 27, 1949, the USA was a federation consisting of 16 state entities: the Republic of Indonesia (the islands of Java and Sumatra) with a population of about 31 million people, and 15 states created by the Dutch with a population of 100 thousand to 11 million people. The state had a bicameral parliament, consisting of the Council of People's Representatives (50 deputies from the Republic of Indonesia and 100 from other states, in proportion to the population) and the Senate (32 senators - 2 from each of the constituent entities of the country). The USA retained close ties with the metropolis - together with the Netherlands, they were part of the Netherlands-Indonesian Union. On August 17, 1950, on the five-year anniversary of Indonesia's independence, the United States of Indonesia was officially dissolved, and in its place the unitary state of the Republic of Indonesia was formed.
