1. Issue description:

1.1. Issue: Japanese Imperial Government. 1st issue of military banknotes. 1937

On October 14, 1938, an announcement was published on the issue of military banknotes to pay for military costs. To this end, special agencies were established in Shanghai, Nanjing, Hanzhou and Suzhou. Agencies were also required to withdraw Bank of Japan notes from circulation. Military yen were printed in Japan, and their issuance in China was made by Yokohama Speshi Bank on behalf of the Ministry of Finance of Japan and the Bank of Japan. The military yen was issued without any security. Initially, the military yen was used for settlements with trading enterprises serving the invaders, then they began to be used for all settlements with the local population and for paying salaries to military personnel.
Formally, the rate of the military yen to the Japanese yen was 1:1. The exchange rate for the local currency was established only after the formation of puppet governments and the establishment of emission banks controlled by the Bank of Japan. (B.V.
