REFERENCE: Munkach or Mukachev (Magyar. Munkàcs, Ugric-Rus. Mukachevo, Czech-words. Munkac, German Munkatsch) - city and fortress in the Beregsky committee (Beregh vàrmegye) in Hungary, on the river. Latorice. Alum and potash production; iron ore mining; making cars and guns; iron mines and forges; grape breeding. The population (9-10 thousand people) consists half of Russians, partly transferred to the Magyar camp, half of the Magyars, Germans, etc. Not far from the city of M., on a high (about 190 m) rock, there is now an old castle, or fortress, M., facing the prison, where Emmerich's wife Tekeli (see), courageous Elena Zrini, withstood the siege of the imperial troops for three years (1685-87). June 14, 1703 Fr. Rakoczy was defeated by the Imperials here, and in 1708 M. was finally occupied by them. During the Hungarian war of 1848-49. fortress M. on August 26, 1849 surrendered to the Russian troops. ESBE. Russia, St. Petersburg, 1890-1907
