The Satsuma Uprising (西南戦争:, January 29 - September 24, 1877) is an anti-government uprising of the untitled aristocracy in Japan led by Saigo Takamori, which occurred in 1877 in the southwest of Kyushu. Also called the Seinan War. It ended with the victory of government forces and the suicide of the rebel leader. The largest and last appearance of the samurai radical opposition against the government during the Meiji restoration. Wiki
