Angola is a Portuguese colony on the western coast of South Africa (in Lower Guinea), south of the Congo. The Governor General of this colony hugs 809,400 square meters. km with 2,000,000 inhabitants. and is divided into three governorates: A., or Loanda, Benguela and Mossamedes, which in turn are divided into presidia, or fortified settlements, and districts; in addition, the Portuguese have a claim to the lands of Kimbund and Jimbandi. The governorship of A., lying between the Dande and Kwantsa rivers and extending from the shore inland to Kassange in the Kwango Valley, has about 66,000 sq. km with 600,000 inhabitants, almost exclusively blacks; the latter mostly belong to the family of Bund peoples and have relatively reached a fairly high degree of culture. Many can even read and write, which is the result of Jesuit missions that spread Christianity here in the 16th century. Large masses of magnetic iron ore in Katsengo County deliver 500 strips of good iron every month. Salt mined along the lower course of the Kvantsy River serves as an instrument of exchange. In addition to the border rivers Dande, Kwantsa and Kwango, mention should also be made of Bengo and Kalukala flowing directly into the sea, and Lucalla and Lombe flowing into Kwantsa. The only somewhat significant water route is Kwantsa, which is 180 km from the mouth up to the Kambambe waterfalls for large boats. There are no roads in the whole country, and in general the Portuguese government cares little about the exploitation of the natural wealth of this colony.
