The law of October 26, 1926 established the gold content of the franc in 0.041842 g of pure gold and introduced a monetary unit of linen equal to 5 francs, the circulation of which ceased with the outbreak of World War II. Until March 30, 1935, lingons were exchanged for gold bars weighing about 12.5 kg or for foreign currency converted to gold. With the exit of Belgium from the Golden Block, the exchange of banknotes for gold was stopped, and the gold content of the franc decreased to 0.030126 g of pure gold. From April 1, 1936 to May 9, 1940, the exchange for bullion gold and foreign currency was made on the basis of this reduced gold content of the franc. With the beginning of the German occupation in May 1940, the franc rate was fixed at 0.10 Reichsmark per franc, and in July 1940 it was reduced to 0.08 Reichsmark.
