Brazilian Empire

Império do Brasil

Issue 1833

REFERENCE: The Brazilian Empire is a state located on the territory of modern Brazil and Uruguay under the rule of Emperor Pedro I and his son Pedro II. It was founded in 1822 and was replaced by a republic in 1889. As a result of Napoleon's occupation of Portugal, the Portuguese royal family moved into exile in Brazil - the most important of the Portuguese colonies. After that, Brazil gained self-government under the rule of the Portuguese dynasty of Braganza. The return of power to Lisbon after the liberation of Portugal from Napoleon provoked a protest, and Brazil gained independence from Portugal, albeit under the rule of a branch of the Portuguese royal family.
