Suidwes-Afrika
Südwestafrika
REFERENCE: South West Africa (African. Suidwes-Afrika, German Südwestafrika) is the name used to name the territory of the modern Republic of Namibia under the control of the German Empire, and then South Africa. In 1915, the territory was withdrawn from German control during the campaign in South West Africa during the First World War. After the war, it was declared, according to the Treaty of Versailles, a mandate of the League of Nations, a territory under the responsibility of the Union of South Africa. After World War II, the Union of South Africa did not agree to turn South West Africa into a UN trust territory. In 1966, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution abolishing South Africa's mandate over South West Africa. In 1971, the International Court of Justice declared the South African Republic's control over the area illegal. South West Africa gained independence in 1990 and changed its name to Namibia.
