REFERENCE: The Second Greek Republic (Greek Βʹ Ελληνική Δημοκρατία) is a period in the history of modern Greece that began with the overthrow in 1924 of the "crowned republic" of the Greek monarchs from the Glucksburg dynasty and ended in 1935 with a military coup that restored the monarchy. The Second Hellenic Republic was proclaimed on 25 March 1924, following Greece's defeat in the war with Turkey in Asia Minor, which was widely criticized by the royal government. During its brief existence, the Second Republic proved unsustainable. Greek society has remained split since the time of the so-called National Schism - the confrontation between pro-Republicans, supporters of Eleftherios Venizelos and monarchists represented by the People's Party, which refused to recognize the legitimacy of the republic.
