Colony of France

REFERENCE: French Sudan (French Soudan français) - the former colony of France in West Africa, part of the region of Western Sudan: the territory along the upper and middle reaches of the Niger and Senegal rivers - the territory of the current state of Mali. On September 9, 1880, on the basis of French possessions in the upper and middle reaches of the Niger and Senegal rivers, the Upper Senegal colony was formed. On August 18, 1890, it was renamed the Territory of French Sudan; its capital was the city of Kaes. After a referendum on September 28, 1958, French Sudan received a special legal status: a member state of the French Community called the Sudanese Republic. On January 17, 1959, the Sudanese Republic began the process of unification with Senegal, resulting in the formation of the Mali Federation.
