REFERENCE: Between 1885 and 1956, Grenada was part of the English colony of Leeward Islands, and between January 1958 and May 1962, it was part of the West Indies Federation. In March 1967, Grenada received the status of an "associated state with Great Britain" with the right to internal self-government. Independence within the British Commonwealth was obtained on February 7, 1974. In April 1974, Grenada became a member of the Caribbean Community, in September 1974 it was admitted to the UN.
