Autonomous Territory of Denmark

REFERENCE: Greenland (grenl. Kalaallit Nunaat, dates. Grønland) is an autonomous territory of Denmark, located on the island of Greenland and its surrounding islands in the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, northeast of North America. It has maritime borders with Canada in the northwest. The population (in 2009) is 57.6 thousand people. The islands belonged to Norway until 1536, after which they passed to Denmark. In 1979, the Danish parliament granted Greenland wide autonomy. In 2008, Greenlanders argued for greater autonomy within the Danish Kingdom. The new Greenland Home Rule Act came into force on 21 June 2009. The capital is Nuuk.
