BACKGROUND: In 1893, with direct U.S. intervention, Queen Liliuokalani was deposed. A year later, the Republic of Hawaii was formed, which was directly dependent on the United States. S. Dole became the president of the republic. In 1898, at the height of the Spanish-American War, the United States annexed Hawaii and granted it self-governing territory status in 1900. From 1901 to 1902, the first president of the Senate of the Hawaiian Islands was Nikolai Sudzilovsky-Roussel, also known as Kauka Lukini. Wiki
