The capital is the city of Dublin, which is home to about a quarter of the country's population (1.4 million people). Member of organizations: Council of Europe (since 1949), UN (since 1955), OECD (since 1960), European Union (since 1973), Euratom (since 1973), European Monetary System (since 1979).
