REFERENCE: Korean Empire - the name of Korea from the Restoration of Kwanmu 1897 to the annexation of Korea by Japan in 1910. The new name was given to the state, which had previously been under the control of the Joseon Dynasty for 500 years, in order to emphasize sovereignty and draw analogies with the ancient Korean states of Samhan.
