REFERENCE: Leeward Islands, South Antilles (Dutch Benedenwindse Eilanden, исп. Islas de Sotavento, English Leeward Islands), a group of large parts of the volcanic islands that form the southern part of the Lesser Antilles off the coast of Venezuela west of 64 ° W. The name Leeward Islands is explained by the leeward (compared to the Windward Islands) position of the islands in relation to the northeast trade wind. The population is about 0.7 million people (2009). Mainly blacks and mulattos live, from the white population mostly Dutch. The main city is the port of Willemstad on the island of Curaçao.
