REFERENCE: Hungarian state (Hung. Magyar Királyság) or "Government of National Unity" (Hung. Nemzeti Összefogás Kormánya) is a puppet regime of Nazi Germany that existed from October 1944 to May 1945 in the occupied Kingdom of Hungary. The reason for the removal of power and the creation of a puppet regime was the desire of the Hungarian government of Regent Miklos Horthy to get out of the war and sign a truce with the USSR. Germany at that time had already lost almost all the allies who either left the war on their own (like Romania and Bulgaria) or were occupied by the troops of the Anti-Hitler coalition. Hungary was also strategically important due to the presence of oil fields on its territory. The Hungarian National Socialist Party of Crossed Arrows, legalized back in March 1944, had major German support and at that time had already become a significant political force in the country.
