Estado da África Oriental
(Mozambique)
REFERENCE: Beira is in central Mozambique, on the Indian Ocean, in the Mozambique Channel. The town was built on the dry marshes of the Pungwe River Delta. The climate here is hot and dry, especially in the summer, from October to February. Malaria danger is significant. In 1887, a Portuguese fort was built on the site of Beira, around which a settlement was formed. In 1891, the headquarters of the Portuguese Mozambique Company was located here. Only in 1942, Beira was transferred under the control of the Portuguese colonial administration. After Mozambique gained independence in 1975, fierce battles took place in the vicinity of the city for a long time between government forces and the opposition movement RENAMO, which had significant support in Beira and in the Sofala region.
