REFERENCE: The Republic of Austria is a state that arose on the ruins of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and existed between the First and Second World Wars. The Republic of Austria was essentially only de facto, since, according to the constitution, the country was officially called the Federal State of Austria. This stage of the country's history was marked by constant clashes between radical groups of the left and right, a vivid example of which is the July Uprising of 1927. The Austrian constitution came into force in 1920, and was repealed in 1929. The first Austrian republic ceased to exist in connection with the Anschluss ("accession") to Germany.
