On the basis of the law of July 14, 2004, from July 1, 2005, a new leu = 10,000 old was put into circulation. Old banknotes and coins were legal tender until December 31, 2006. Since January 1, 2007, the National Bank of Romania has been exchanging old lei for new ones without limiting the amount and term.
