Upper Senegal and Niger

Haut Sénégal et Niger

Upper Senegal & Niger

Colony of France

REFERENCE: Upper Senegal and Niger (French: Haut Sénégal et Niger) is a former colony in French West Africa, created in 1904 to replace another colony of Senegambia and Niger. Niger became a separate military district in 1911 and a colony in its own right in 1922. French Upper Volta stood out in 1919 and was later (in 1920) reorganized into the colony of French Sudan (modern Mali). The capital of the colony was the city of Bamako.
