REFERENCE: The Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, also known as the Central African Federation (CAF), is a semi-independent state (British protectorate) in southern Africa existing from August 1, 1953 to December 31, 1963. The federation was formed from the self-governing (since 1923) colony of Southern Rhodesia (modern Zimbabwe) and protectorates of Northern Rhodesia (modern Zambia) and Nyasalenda (modern Malawi). It was the possession of the British crown, being neither a colony nor a dominion, although as in the dominions, the power of the British crown was represented by the Governor General.

The pound of Rhodesia and Nyasaland pound (Rhodesia and Nyasaland pound) is a monetary unit: the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland in 1956-1963, the three territories that were previously part of the Federation (Southern Rhodesia, Northern Rhodesia, Nyasaland), in 1964, Malawi in July - November 1964, Zambia in October - November 1964. Prior to the creation of the Bank of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, the role of the emission center was performed by the Monetary Council of Central Africa, which issued the southern Rhodesian pound as a single currency of the federation. In 1955, the central bank of the federation was created - the Bank of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, which began operations in 1956. In 1956, a new monetary unit of the federation was introduced - the pound of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, equal to the pound sterling. The issue was 100% provided by pounds sterling. The exchange of Southern Rhodesian pounds for Rhodesia and Nyasaland pounds was 1:1. After the collapse of the federation on December 31, 1963, the pound continued to be used in all three territories that were previously part of the federation. On November 16, 1964, in Southern Rhodesia, Zambia and Malawi, the seizure of Bank of Rhodesia and Nyasaland banknotes and the issuance of national currencies began: the Rhodesian pound, the Zambian pound and the Malawian pound. The exchange in all three territories was 1:1. On July 1, 1965, the banknotes of Rhodesia and Nyasaland lost their legal tender, and the Bank of Rhodesia and Nyasaland was liquidated. The bank's assets and liabilities are divided among three new central banks - the Reserve Bank of Rhodesia, the Bank of Zambia and the Reserve Bank of Malawi. On January 25, 1966, the production of new coins began simultaneously in three countries, replacing the coins of Rhodesia and Nyasaland in circulation. Wiki
