REFERENCE: Portugal, officially República Portuguesa, is the westernmost state in continental Europe. The state is located in the southwestern part of the Iberian Peninsula. In the north and east it borders with Spain, in the south and west it is washed by the Atlantic Ocean.
Republic since 1910. Member of NATO (since 1949), UN (since 1955), OECD (since 1961), EU (since January 1, 1986), Commonwealth of Portuguese-speaking countries (since 1996). Included in the Schengen area and the euro area. Participates in the Ibero-American Summits since 1991.
